Murcia Covid cases halved after surge in June
The number of coronavirus infections in the Region of Murcia has decreased by almost 60% in fourteen days
After several years under the cloud of Covid, experts have come to expect a surge in the virus during the summer months as the temperatures rise and more people head off on holiday and enjoy get-togethers. That’s exactly what happened during the month of June in the Region of Murcia, when the incidence rate shot up to 131 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
But fast-forward a couple of weeks and coronavirus has hit the brakes, with infections more than halving in July. In the last 14 days alone, the all-important incidence rate has dropped to just 64.6 cases, meaning that officially, only 990 people are infected in the entire Region.
In fact, the hot weather has helped to tackle every kind of respiratory illness, dragging infections down by 18% in just a week.
Anyone hit with a summer dose of Covid can expect symptoms like cough, fatigue, headache, sore throat, fever, hoarse voice, muscle pain, shortness of breath, loss of smell and appetite, tachycardia, congestion, runny nose, sneezing and diarrhoea. These symptoms are usually experienced for 4 or 5 days during the peak of the infection, and another 4 days during its decline.
Aside from coronavirus, both influenza and bronchitis/bronchiolitis have also decreased in the Region of Murcia: 28.6% and 19.4%, respectively. Thus, in the community there were 20 cases of influenza in the last week and 283 cases of acute bronchitis/bronchiolitis.
Compared to previous summers, Covid and other respiratory infections are mostly being treated at home, with very few illnesses actually requiring hospital stays. Nevertheless, both the Spanish Society of Primary Care Physicians (Semergen) and the Ministry of Health itself have asked people to remain vigilant and to follow the usual recommendations to protect the most vulnerable, such as social distancing and wearing a mask when unwell, along with regular hand washing.
