ARCHIVED - Murcia businesses producing 345,000 facemasks and PPE items every week
Production of quality-certified facemasks has boomed since Covid was first detected in Spain
Since the coronavirus pandemic was first detected in Spain the demand for facemasks and other items of personal protection equipment has soared to levels which could not have been imagined a year ago, and in response various businesses throughout the country have sensed the opportunity and entered the sector.
In the Region of Murcia alone as many as 225,000 facemasks and 120,000 medical and hospital gowns are now being produced every week, and the regional government has helped the companies responsible for them to obtain the official quality certifications required. During the economic slump which has resulted from the pandemic this is one of the few areas of the manufacturing sector to have prospered, and as a result it is also becoming an increasingly important factor in generating employment not only in Murcia but throughout the country.
As the third wave of infection continues to cause higher numbers of reported Covid cases the likelihood is that in future Spanish manufacturers will increase their production levels in other items of PPE such as goggles, gloves and protective overalls: at present most of those used in Spain are manufactured in south-east Asia.
