ARCHIVED - Murcia asks for extra help in intercepting Easter holiday visitors during lockdown
All along the coast patrols and roadblocks have been intensified but residents still report the arrival of unwanted visitors from the cities
The regional government of Murcia and various Town Halls are asking for further assistance from Spain’s armed services in the efforts to prevent people from taking advantage of the Easter holidays to travel to holiday homes and second residences in the Costa Cálida as residents in coastal towns and villages continue to witness new arrivals from elsewhere in the Region and further afield.
Concerns over the matter were passed on to the President of the national government on Sunday by Fernando López Miras, his counterpart in the Region of Murcia, while local police forces in the coastal municipalities of the Costa Cálida intensified their road blocks and spot checks in order to identify those breaking lockdown restrictions. Sr López Miras also called for stiffer fines to be stipulated for such offenders, adding that the arrival of better weather and the start of Easter Week could lead to the relative success of Murcia in restricting the spread of Covid-19 being jeopardized by carelessness and complacency.
In the view of the Murcia president it would be advisable to completely enclose major inland cities with police patrols on the roads in order to prevent trips to the coast over Semana Santa, adding that Easter of 2020 is cancelled in the streets of Spain but the beaches must be considered closed as well.
In Cartagena, meanwhile – a municipality which includes a long stretch of Mediterranean coastline as well as the southern half of the Mar Menor – Mayoress Ana Belén Castejon made a similar demand for more help in monitoring coastal access roads to the central government delegation in the Region of Murcia. According to Sra Castejón, the residents of Cartagena are, in general, behaving in exemplary fashion during the lockdown, and the arrival of irresponsible visitors from elsewhere cannot be tolerated.
But the resources of the local police force are insufficient to monitor the whole of the coast, she adds, and more help is needed from the Guardia Civil and the Policía Nacional.
Similarly, efforts are being made to step up police vigilance in the municipality of Mazarrón, where Mayor Gaspar Miras stresses that those not heeding the lockdown will be hit with heavy fines, especially those who are found to have travelled to the municipality from elsewhere, and in Águilas practically all roads leading into and out of the town centre were blocked across the weekend in an effort to prevent visitors from other areas reaching the coast.
However, vehicles are still managing to get around the roadblocks, those with local knowledge using backroads and even ramblas to sidestep the patrols, and many readers have reported the arrival of their neighbours from not only the cities within the region, but other areas of Spain as well.
Even our own home is in the middle of nowhere, yet on Saturday morning tyretracks showed that our nearest neighbours who live in the city of Cartagena had arrived at their weekend home as normal.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
