ARCHIVED - Murcia Aquarium reopens to the public from October 27
Tickets to the Aquarium in Murcia city cost just one euro
The University of Murcia Aquarium is reopening to the public from this Wednesday October 27, after remaining closed for some time due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Aquarium has two floors of exhibits, displaying plenty of different marine species, including several types of sharks and even seahorses. The building is also home to laboratories where the University of Murcia carries out investigation and conservation work.
One of the species which the University is working hard to conserve is the noble pen shell, a type of mussel which is highly endangered and is the second largest mollusc in the world, reaching up to a metre and a half in height. This species is endemic to the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor is one of the only places in the world where these mussels can still be found in the wild. However, the recent episodes of anoxia and contamination in the lagoon have led experts to fear that the noble pen shell may be in even more danger, which is why the University Aquarium has taken in some specimens.
Also on display at the Aquarium is an incredibly exotic Clarion angelfish, which was donated by an English millionaire upon his death, as he wanted to the 8,000-euro fish to go to an investigative public aquarium.
Members of the public can visit the centre for the low price of just one euro and the Aquarium also offers guided tours in English.
