ARCHIVED - Minor earth tremor in Lorca on Monday afternoon

A 2.3 mbLg tremor was felt by residents in south-west Murcia

The National Geographic Institute has confirmed that the earth did indeed move for some Lorca residents on Monday afternoon when a minor earthquake measuring 2.3 mbLg was recorded at 15.32 local time.

The epicentre of the tremor was slightly to the North-east of the city and although some people felt it, no material damage is believed to have occurred and Emergency services received only four phone calls asking if there had been an earthquake.

It should be remembered that the friction between tectonic plates in south-eastern Spain makes occurrences such as this far more frequent than in northern Europe, particularly along the Alhama fault line, and that while the intensity of the tremors is at this low level there is no cause for alarm.
