ARCHIVED - Mercadona drastically reduces price of disposable masks
Mask wars are raging in retail stores as millions are used every week across Spain
For those who like a bargain, and prefer to use disposable masks rather than fabric, the price of masks has been a constant source of complaint since the pandemic began.
The Ed. recalls having to pay nearly 6 euros for the first mask purchased from a pharmacy during lockdown (which was subsequently “lost” by her husband on his first shopping trip out), and since then, the price has come down considerably as the supermarkets and retail chains bulk buy masks by the million and find ways to manufacture at a lower price.
Mercadona announced on Wednesday that it would be reducing the price of its 10 disposable masks to 3 euros, both in store and online.
Masks are obviously a contentious issue and the volume of masks being used is an environmental disaster, but since hospitals in the Murcia region have banned the use of fabric masks, it’s always useful to have a pack of disposables in the car for such eventualities.
Thoughtful disposal of masks is also important, as environmentalists start to find masks on the seabed and even in the stomachs of marine animals, the impact of covid on the environment a topic which will undoubtedly remain in the news a long time after the virus has been contained and this whole pandemic forgotten as it is estimated that it will take between 300 and 400 years for a mask to decompose naturally.
