Mazarron beach catches fire

The forest fire was declared in Cala Leño this Wednesday afternoon

A fire broke out in the Cala Leño beach in the municipality of Mazarrón yesterday, Wednesday August 16, in an area of bushes, scrub and pine trees.

Firefighters were called to the scene after the fire began at around 1.49pm, as reported in a call to the 112 Emergency Centre by people who witnessed the fire both sides of the access road to Cala Leño.

According to the callers, a strong wind meant the fire spread rapidly in an area that is difficult for fire crews to access and which has limited telephone signal.

Thankfully, by 2.19pm it became clear that helicopters and planes were not necessary, and at around 4pm the fire was declared fully extinguished.

Some 600 square metres of scrubland are thought to have burned in two different focal points, but it could have been much worse.

The causes of the fire are unknown.
