ARCHIVED - May property sales in Andalucía up by 122 per cent
The region reports its highest sales figures since before the start of the pandemic
As the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Spanish property market continues to ease evidence continues to accumulate to suggest that in Andalucía sales activity is returning to pre-coronavirus levels.
The latest provisional figures published by the national government on Tuesday, relating to the month of May, report that 9,684 homes in the region changed hands during the month. This not only represents more than double (122 per cent) the figure for the same month last year, when the first lockdown affected activity severely, but also the highest total since December 2019, three months before the first pandemic lockdown in Spain began.
Equally encouraging is the long-term picture given by the rolling 12-monthly total, which now stands at 93,442. With the first pandemic months of March to May 2020 having been washed out of the total it has risen by 2.4 per cent over the last 12 months and by 13 per cent in just three months.
It comes as no surprise to learn that that during May all 17 regions of Spain reported year-on-year increases in sales, with the national average rise being 107.6 per cent. The sharpest increase was in the Region of Murcia at 206 per cent, followed by those in the Canaries (177 per cent) and La Rioja (147 per cent), but for the third consecutive month the Balearics footed the table after recording a rise of “only” 61.6 per cent in comparison with May 2020.
In the eight provinces of Andalucía the year-on-year increases reported in sales activity were 165% in Sevilla, 152% in Almería, 145% in Córdoba, 144% in Granada, 127% in Cádiz, 113% in Málaga, 87% in Jaén and just 23% in Huelva.
