This May 18 and 19,
Lorca will once again become the centre of the custom motorcycle world, hosting the seventh edition of the Custom Lorca festival. With thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts expected to descend upon the historic city, this year’s event promises to deliver another action-packed weekend filled with custom culture, live music and adrenaline-pumping acrobatics.
Presented earlier this week by officials from the City Council, including Counsellors Santiago Parra and Juan Miguel Bayonas, alongside President of the ‘Custom Lorca’ Motorcycle Club, Diego Piqueras, the highly anticipated festival aims to raise funds for the Diabetes Association of Lorca (ADILOR). All proceeds from the sale of entries for the gift raffles will go directly towards supporting the vital work of the association.
Taking place over two days, the festival kicks off at 6.30pm on Saturday afternoon and at 11.30am on Sunday morning.
The schedule includes two urban routes that will start from the La Merced parking lot and will run along Calle Santo Domingo, Calle Lope Gisbert, Óvalo Santa Paula, Jerónimo Santa Fe, Avenida Adolfo Suárez, La Viña, Ronda Sur, Alameda de Cervantes, Avenida Juan Carlo , Avenida Europa and return to La Merced along Avenida Santa Clara. After the motorcycle tour through the streets of Lorca, participants will be able to enjoy the aeronautical aerobatics of Exhibiciones 666.
This year’s soundtrack will be provided by the groups Sugar rock, El Camarote De Los Hermanos Marx and Norte Perdido. The festival poster has been designed by José María Campoy from Lorca, who has in the past drawn posters for world famous groups like Guns ‘N’ Roses and the Rolling Stones.
The president of the Motorcycle Club highlighted during the festival presentation that “the Custom Lorca promises a unique experience. It is a consolidated biker meeting in which we put a lot of effort. The festival was born with a double purpose: to bring together motorcycle enthusiasts in the city of the sun and contribute to a different social purpose each year.”

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites, and historic buildings, around which the modern City has built its tourism industry. Amongst these are Lorca Castle, the Jewish Quarter of the castle and Synagogue,
Plaza de España, Colegiata de San Patricio, Museo de Arqueologico Municipal, Iglesia de San Francisco, Casa Huerto Ruano, Palacio de Guevara, Iglesia de San Mateo, Pósito de los Panaderos, Convento Virgen de las Huertas, Antiguo Convento de la Merced, Iglesia del Carmen and the Teatro Guerra.
Unfortunately Lorca has also been prone to natural disaster, suffering a Gota Fría on September 28th 2012, as well as an earthquake which measured 5.3 on the Richter scale on 11th May 2011 and claimed 9 lives. Since this earthquake the city has been rebuilding, winning recognition for its Lorca, Open for Restoration initiative, which used the restoration of the city as a tourist attraction whilst it rebuilt its historical buildings, some of which are currently still not open.
The tourist office itself has temporarily relocated until the renovations are completed and is on Calle San Patricio near the church.
Lorca also has an area of coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, in the Sierra de Almenara, which includes the beaches of, Puntas de Calnegre, Baño de las Mujeres, San
Pedro, El Siscal, Cala Honda, Cuartel del Ciscar, Junquera, Cala de la Gruta, Cala Leña, Los Hierros, Cala Blanca and Playa Larga, although many are accessible only through agricultural exploitations.
However, in spite of its many attractions, the name of Lorca is synonymous with Easter, (Semana Santa) its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status and famous throughout Spain. The week includes a
series of parades in which the whites (Paso Blanco) and blues (Paso Azúl) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.
Lorca also has a Parador hotel, located within the complex of its historic castle.
