Masks no longer mandatory in hospitals and pharmacies in Spain

The Ministry of Health in Spain agreed on Friday June 23 to end the mandatory use of facemasks in pharmacies, medical and social care settings such as nursing homes, health centres, physiotherapy clinics and dental offices. This was the last major anti-Covid measure that remained in place since the coronavirus pandemic broke out in March 2020.

While masks will no longer be compulsory in hospitals in general, they may be required in areas where there are immunocompromised patients, such as oncology wards, operating rooms and the ICU.

After more than 1,140 days of mandatory mask-wearing, the measure will officially be scrapped by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday June 27. After this, it will published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) and enter into force.
