ARCHIVED - Mar Menor in real time
The regional government in Murcia has installed surveillance systems to give a view of selected Mar Menor beaches in real-time
The situation regarding the Mar Menor is complicated, and at the moment the water quality is good in most areas of the lagoon, with the algal problems largely confined to specific corners, and with the summer tourism season in full swing, the Murcian government is keen to stave off some of the bad publicity generated by the ongoing problems of the lagoon and show that the Mar Menor is looking good.
To do this, the regional government has installed eight webcams and five weather stations which will monitor the region’s beaches at all times. At an investment of €60,000, the new monitoring stations have been installed in the municipalities of Cartagena, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar and Los Alcázares.
The reasons behind the new systems are two-fold, the general director of Mar Menor, Miriam Pérez, explained during a presentation Lo Pagán Nautical Activities Center, in San Pedro del Pinatar. Having information in real-time will allow anyone to know from their home to evaluate the current situation in the Mar Menor, while also allowing officials to quickly address any issues that arise.
The points chosen to locate the devices are Lo Pagán, Los Narejos, Santiago de la Ribera, and La Manga, while separate webcams have been set up to monitor the colonies of fan mussels, whose population has been threatened by vandals, climate change and the issues of the Mar Menor in recent years. The cameras will be supervised by the El Valle Forestry Coordination Centre.
In addition, five meteorological stations have been erected which will offer constant updates on conditions such as wind, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, volume of precipitation and UV index.
"Although these are technical tools, their use will be open to all those who are interested in knowing the state of the Mar Menor", explained the general director.
The cameras have not been installed in the areas which are curently known to have algal problems, principally the area around Los Nietos and Los Urrutias.
