ARCHIVED - Mar Menor beaches re-open in San Pedro del Pinatar after thousands of dead fish were washed ashore
The operation to remove dead fish and crustaceans from the shore has been completed
With another “gota fría” affecting the Region of Murcia on Tuesday morning (although not, according to Aemet, as drastically as the one which hit the Costa Cálida in the middle of September) the council workers who have just completed the clean-up of flood debris on the beaches of San Pedro del Pinatar will be crossing their fingers in the hope that they are not required to start the laborious task again almost immediately.
Among the many consequences of the heavy rain and flooding of five weeks ago was the arrival of a large quantity of debris on the beaches of Villananitos, La Puntica and La Mota in the Mar Menor, as well as the washing away of the sand and damage to infrastructures on the shore. But ten days ago another crisis erupted as tens of thousands of dead fish and crustaceans washed up on the shore following an episode of anoxia (lack of oxygen) and for the whole of last week various groups were involved in removing them both manually and with the aid of machinery and boats.
The three beaches concerned were finally re-opened to the public on Friday afternoon.
