Police found it advertised on the internet for re-sale
The thief hired a truck to transport the boat for onward sale.
A 34-year-old Spaniard, a resident of Cartagena and with a criminal record for similar offences, has been arrested by the Guardia Civíl following the theft of a boat on a trailer from the garage of a property in Playa Honda.
Investigations began at the beginning of last month, when the boat owner went to his holiday property and discovered that a boat stored in his garage on a trailer, along with an outboard motor, had been stolen. Investigators first checked images of the building's surveillance system and soon spotted an old acquaintance with a long criminal record known to the agents, who was temporarily resident in the same urbanization where the robbery had occurred.
Agents located a company which had been hired to transport the to the neighboring town of Los Nietos where the perpetrator was found.
However, the boat had already been sold via a second-hand commercial website to a commercial buyer of used boats and engines, who claimed to have purchased the boat in good faith believing it to have belonged to the deceased grandfather of the thief. Fortunately for the Guardia, the boat had been re-advertised for sale, so was easily located.
After recovering the boat and other stolen objects, the Civil Guard established a search to find the alleged perpetrator and finally managed to locate and arrest him aboard a vehicle in the Cartagena district of Playa Honda. He will now face charges of robbery with force, fraud and damage of more than 2,000 euros to the property and boat.
