As of this week, over five weeks after the destructive mid-September gota fría storm which caused extensive flooding and damage in the Region of Murcia, the rail service between Lorca and Águilas is operational again with repair and reconstruction work on the tracks having been completed.
The trains started running again on Sunday 20th October after services were suspended on 13th September due to subsidence and flooding along the trackbed between Lorca and the coast. One 25-metres stretch of the line had to be completely rebuilt, with new ballast forming a solid base over which new tracks were laid, and at the same time a large quantity of floodwater debris had to be removed by 15 heavy machinery operators.
