ARCHIVED ARTICLE The Murcia municipality has initiated twinning arrangements between the two towns
The Mayor of
Lorca, Diego José Mateos, and the Deputy Mayor, Francisco Morales, have visited the French town of Vias to begin the twinning process between the two towns.
The visit, which lasted a full 48 hours, has served to allow the Lorca representatives meet a large group of descendants of people from Lorca – about 300 people – who are residing in this town of 6,000 inhabitants located in southern France.
In summer, the population of Vias, France exceeds 60,000, and it is located very close to other municipalities already twinned with Lorca, such as Adissan and Mauguio.
The Association of Friends of Lorca invited the municipal representation to meet its members and the city, and to initiate the twinning process between the two localities.
The representatives of Lorca have thanked both the initiative of the Association of Friends of Lorca, especially its president Geneovive Fernandez and its board, and the City Council of Vias, through its mayor, Jordan Dartier, who expressed his willingness to initiate the twinning of the two municipalities.
The Mayor of Lorca, Diego José Mateos, said that thanks to the visit, “we were able to see how in the French town, Lorca’s people are fully integrated into society, but do not forget the land where they were born and left very young.
“During our stay, we shared moments with lorquinos and lorquinas from the neighbourhood of San José and from districts such as Aguaderas, Cazalla, La Paca, Marchena and La Pulgara who continue to carry Lorca in their memories and in their hearts and pass it on to their children and grandchildren.”
Mayor Mateos announced that “shortly, the official twinning process will begin with the aim of establishing permanent ties of union and fraternity between the two towns and that the Lorca community of Vias will feel a little closer to their native Lorca.”
The Deputy Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Morales, stressed “the importance of this twinning from a sentimental and emotional point of view between the two towns and between Lorca residents in Lorca and Vias.”
He continued: “By strengthening these ties, we can continue to increase the flow of visitors between the two towns in order to promote tourism with France with a view to helping more and more French people get to know us and deciding to travel to Lorca to enjoy our town, with France being one of our potential tourist attractions.”
The Deputy Mayor also highlighted “the importance of this twinning due to the large presence of people from Lorca in Vias and the affection of the entire French town and its City Council to Lorca, which is mutual”, and finished his address by “thanking the Association of Friends of Lorca de Vias, its Mayor and his team for the excellent treatment received.”
