Nowhere in the Region of Murcia was the cancellation of this year’s Semana Santa processions due to the coronavirus pandemic greeted with more sadness than in the city of Lorca, where the annual events are especially spectacular and enjoy International Tourist Interest status, but now that Easter has passed efforts are being made to at least ensure that the problem of takings from advance ticket sales to watch the biblical parades from the stands will be treated appropriately.
During Easter Week the different brotherhoods which organize and take part in the processions did everything in their power to make sure that the residents of Lorca were at least able to savour some of the atmosphere from the safety of their homes, but of course those who were planning to travel to the city – many of them from other parts of Spain and Europe – missed out on the experience. The Paso Blanco and the Paso Azul (the two foremost brotherhoods) report that online ticket sales reached between 80 and 90 per cent of all seats available, although it is not yet clear how many reservations were made by locals and what proportion were purchased by people from outside the city.
In a statement issued this week councillor José Luis Ruiz Guillén underlined that at the moment the first priority in Lorca, as elsewhere in Spain, is of course to limit the spread of Covid-19 and overcome the state of emergency, but looking ahead meetings will be held with the leaders of the processional groups to decide upon a suitable solution. In this respect it will be necessary to prioritize the image of the city in the eyes of potential tourists and to make sure that the attractiveness of future visits is in no way diminished.
An important consideration to take into account is that from a legal point of view there are no precedents for the cancellation of events such as the processions in Lorca on account of a pandemic. In previous years adverse weather conditions have occasionally made it impossible to hold some of the processions but not since the Civil War have they been suspended for other reasons, and lawyers are being consulted in order to establish what responsibilities should be borne in these circumstances by the brotherhoods who sold tickets.
Tourist office personnel have returned to work this week but are only dealing with email enquiries and the tourist office is not open for public visits. However, they will not be able to deal with enquiries about ticket sales until the issue has been resolved, so if you did buy tickets, sit tight for the moment and any further information will be published as it becomes available.
