Much has been made in Lorca of the recent renovation of the main street of Avenida Juan Carlos I, but unfortunately here and in other parts of the city some of the residents appear to appreciate the new decorative elements to the extent of being tempted to steal the flowers which have been planted.
Police vigilance is being stepped up after a dozen or so geraniums were uprooted between the Alameda de Ramón y Cajal and the Alameda de Poeta Para Vico, and decorative shrubs have also gone missing, while in Juan Carlos I various of the flower pots are now empty apart from the soil and drip watering pipes. Local councillor Ángel Ramón Meca reports that police presence has been intensified, not because of the cost of the plants themselves, which is minimal, but because of the inconvenience, efforts and investment of public funds required to continually replace them and repair damaged watering systems.
At the same time, Sr Meca urged members of the public to report any damage being done to street furniture or plants and flowers to the local police.
