ARCHIVED - Lorca begins maintenance work at 38 schools to prevent Legionella
The control and prevention work will also be carried out fountains, sports facilities and hostels in Lorca

As the autumn term begins, Lorca City Council has embarked on a huge task to prevent and control the spread of Legionella in the 38 schools of the municipality. Legionella is an uncommon yet serious lung disease that can be picked up by inhaling droplets of contaminated water.
The work began on September 6 and involves a specialised company treating not only the schools themselves but also the 65 ornamental fountains, 8 sports facilities and 4 municipal hostels that all use water and may be susceptible to spreading the disease.
Lorca’s mayor explained that although schools are generally thought to be lower risk areas for the proliferation of Legionella, nevertheless stringent “cleaning and disinfection tasks are carried out before the start of the school year, leaving a record of the cleaning-disinfection treatment carried out by means of the corresponding certificate, which is included in the maintenance book of the centre.”
Samples will also be collected and sent off for analysis 15 days after the full cleaning and disinfection operation is completed.
Furthermore, councillor of Health and Education José Ángel Ponce confirmed that even more controls are carried out at the 'Pilar Soubrier' Special Education School, since the students who live there have access to hot water, increasing the chances of Legionella spreading.
“As for municipal shelters and sports facilities, since they have domestic hot water systems with an accumulator, they are also considered facilities with a higher probability of proliferation and dispersion of Legionella, while ornamental fountains and fire-fighting water systems are considered as installations with less probability of proliferation and dispersion,” he added.
Legionella is a bacterial disease that is usually present in surface water from lakes, rivers or ponds. While drinking contaminated water usually doesn’t cause infection, people can become ill if water distribution systems aren’t properly maintained.
