ARCHIVED - List of flights diverted to Corvera airport on Thursday by fire at Alicante-Elche
Passenger numbers at Corvera boosted the terminal fire in Alicante
Passenger numbers at the Region of Murcia International Airport in Corvera received an unexpected boost on Wednesday 15th January, the anniversary of the first commercial flights to arrive at the new facility, when a serious fire broke out in the terminal building at Alicante-Elche airport and brought about the diversion of numerous services to Murcia and Valencia.
Some flights had to be cancelled completely but it is reported that twelve were diverted to Corvera, among them three from Oslo, Stockholm and Milan (in the last two cases becoming the first commercial flights to travel between those airports and Corvera). Passengers who unexpectedly found themselves landing in the Region of Murcia were offered free coach transfers to Alicante-Elche, while at Corvera extra staff were brought in to deal with the unforeseen increase in the number of flights on what was scheduled to be a low-key anniversary in the middle of winter flight schedules.
In addition the airport remained open until midnight rather than 23.00 to allow the arrival of more flights, and with Alicante-Elche remaining closed until at least 14.00 there is more unscheduled traffic at Corvera on Thursday: the revised arrivals board, according to the Aena website, is currently as follows:
