ARCHIVED - Las Claras del Mar Menor school launches: Save the Mar Menor Project
The initiative aims to educate school children in the Mar Menor about caring for the environment
Las Claras del Mar Menor bilingual school in the Los Alcázares municipality, has launched a unique educational project called 'Salvemos el Mar Menor' with the aim of teaching the children how to properly care for their environment.
The Mar Menor, for years the jewel in the crown of the tourism sector of the regional economy, has been subject to a worrying deterioration in the marine environment of the lagoon, due mainly to the leaching of agricultural nitrates into its waters, a problem exacerbated by several episodes of flooding. According to professor Elisa Galera who teaches at the school and who has spearheaded the project, the hope is that educating children early on about the environment with lead to lifelong responsibility.
In addition to showing her pupils how to take better care of the Mar Menor, the professor’s initiative teaches about recycling and reducing waste, as well as promoting teamwork and problem solving.
The children have created a wall mural using the lids from plastic and waste containers, with the text: 'Salvemos el Mar Menor'; save the Mar Menor or let's save the Mar Menor.
Earlier this month, the government of the Region of Murcia and Cartagena council finally reached an agreement to take on the responsibility of removing the unpleasant sludge and algal deposits from the beaches of Los Urrutias, Los Nietos, Estrella de Mar and Punta Brava in the Cartagena municipality and Villananitos in San Pedro del Pinatar, following what they call the "inaction" of the national government.
The national government maintains that responsibility for cleaning the beaches lies with the regional government and local councils.
