ARCHIVED - Kinahan gang fugitive arrested in Lanzarote
The suspect was wanted by UK authorities at the time he was apprehended in Spain
The Guardia Civil on the island of Lanzarote have arrested a 38-year-old Irish citizen who is wanted in the UK for drug trafficking and money laundering charges. The suspect is a known member of the organised crime group led by Thomas ‘Bomber’ Kavanagh in the UK, a senior member of the notorious Kinahan clan.
The fugitive’s trial was held in July last year in Britain but he never showed up, claiming that he had been unable to get a Covid PCR test. The judge subsequently issued an international arrest warrant.
The suspect was tracked to a house in the municipality of La Asomada and he was apprehended on Thursday October 21 in a bar near his home. He has been living in Lanzarote, where he runs a boat hire company with his wife, since 2017.
The gang member has been remanded in custody pending his extradition to the UK.
Thomas Kavanagh
The fugitive's chief, Thomas ‘Bomber’ Kavanagh, is serving a three-year sentence imposed last year for possessing a stun gun disguised as a torch. In addition, he is awaiting sentencing for drug trafficking and money laundering.
Kavanagh is a senior member of the Kinahan organised crime gang in the UK and before his arrest was known to run the operation from a secure mansion, complete with bulletproof glass, in Birmingham.
Gerry Hutch "The Monk"
Nicknamed ‘The Monk’ by murdered journalist Veronica Guerin, Hutch was arrested in Spain in August 2021 and extradited to Ireland the following month. He is a direct rival of Kinahan and the two criminals have been involved in a turf war over drug territory for years.
