Housewives in Spain can now claim a pension: What you need to know

From 2025, eligible homemakers will receive €564 a month - here’s how to apply

For decades, millions of women in Spain have dedicated their lives to running households and raising families, often without a safety net for their later years. Unlike those who have worked in paid jobs, they haven’t contributed to Social Security, which has meant no pension when it’s time to retire. But that’s about to change.

From 2025, there’s going to be a non-contributory pension just for housewives, offering financial support of €564 each month, spread over 14 payments a year. It’s a significant step towards recognising the value of unpaid domestic work, offering greater security to those who have spent their lives looking after others.

Who can apply?

While this pension is welcome news, not everyone will be eligible. To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:

You must be at least 65 years old when you apply.
You need to have lived in Spain for at least 10 years since turning 16, including at least two consecutive years right before applying.
Your income has to be limited. If you’re living alone, your annual earnings shouldn’t go over €7,905.80. If you live with family, the income limits change based on the size of your household.

For instance, the threshold rises to €13,439.86 per year for two-person households, and €24,507.98 for families of four. If you live with your parents or children, the limits increase further, reaching €33,599.65 for two people and €61,269.95 for four.

How much will you receive?

The pension amounts to €7,905.80 a year, which works out at €564.70 per month, paid over 14 months. However, if you have other income, your pension amount may be reduced.

How to apply

Applications are handled by regional governments, except in Ceuta and Melilla, and the Social Security Institute (IMSERSO) oversees the process.

To apply, you’ll need to submit documents including:

Your DNI or NIE (identity document)
Proof of residency in Spain for the required period
A declaration of income (for both you and your household)

Each region may ask for additional documents to assess financial circumstances. Once approved, payments will be backdated to when you submitted your application.

Important things to consider

This pension cannot be combined with contributory pensions, such as state retirement or disability pensions. It’s also not compatible with other social benefits from the same public system, so it’s worth checking for any conflicts before applying.

This new pension scheme is a game-changer for many homemakers, finally giving some well-deserved financial recognition for their lifelong work. If you think you might be eligible, it’s worth gathering your documents and starting the application process as soon as possible.
