Horror crash in Cartagena kills a young passenger travelling in the boot of a car
The driver of the vehicle, a minor, tested positive for drugs and alcohol after the crash near Los Belones

Guardia Civil of the Region of Murcia have arrested a 17-year-old boy who crashed his vehicle on the RM-12, near Los Belones-Cartagena, while driving without a licence and under the influence of both drugs and alcohol. The horror crash also resulted in the death of one of the occupants.
The tragic event unfolded during the early hours of Thursday morning, July 27, on the busy road which joins the AP-7 with La Manga del Mar Menor. Guardia Civil officers were quickly on the scene and established that, while going around a sharp bend, the car hit the concrete median that separates the two lanes before bouncing back and ramming into the left dividing wall.
The vehicle involved was a car designed to carry a maximum of five people, but seven youngsters were crammed inside at the time. One, who was travelling in the boot when the vehicle hit the barriers, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers and medics provided first aid to the rest of the passengers but the driver was nowhere to be seen, having fled the scene of the accident in another car that had reportedly stopped to help.
Police later tracked the 17-year-old to his home, where they determined that he had never been issued with a driving licence. He was given a breathalyser, which tested positive for alcohol. He was also found to have cannabis and amphetamines in his system.
The young driver was arrested and will be charged with crimes of reckless homicide, driving a vehicle without a licence and abandoning the scene of an accident.
Following this devastating event, the Guardia Civil has appealed to all road users who come upon an accident to take note of as much information as possible to aid with any follow-up investigation. The most important data, according to officers, pertains to the people involved and the vehicle itself, particularly the licence plate number.
