ARCHIVED - Hopes dwindle that normal levels of British tourists will return to Spain this summer
British holidaymakers are unlikely to return to Spain's Costas in significant numbers until the autumn.
Spain's Costas have been dealt yet another blow and hopes are dwindling for a return of British tourists this summer after the UK government extended travel and other restrictions due to the expansion of the Delta variant in the UK.
Boris Johnson has delayed the lifting of the remaining restrictions in the UK until July 19 - a four-week delay to the final phase of his roadmap to the end of lockdown, a move which will have major repercussions for Spain's tourism industry.
The sector now fears a summer without British holidaymakers, with the Hoteliers Association in Benidorm and Costa Blanca, Spain (HOSBEC) warning "the scenario in the UK is very worrying".
"The sector faces two scenarios, receiving British visitors at the end of July in the best of cases or, if the situation remains complicated, September is the less optimistic of the forecasts," said Hosbec in a statement.
Meanwhile, Hosbec's vice president, Federico Fuster, is pinning hopes on negotiations between the European Union and the UK government "over the bilateral equalisation of the health passport".
"We have some faith in the European health passport so let's see if diplomacy gets the British to join in and thus facilitate travel," he said.
Spain's hotel sector has been hit hard by the pandemic, with average losses of 80 per cent - around €1.2 billion and other sectors, such as air travel and transport are also reporting a significant downturn .
On the Costa Blanca, 70 per cent of the hotels in the Valencian region (provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellon) have been closed for "most of the last 15 months", and 40 per cent have not "taken a cent", according to Hosbec.
"The average opening period of the establishments has been 84 days out of the last 450," added the association.
Despite the knock back, the Valencian Community hotel sector is facing summer "with a more optimistic outlook than last year".
The increase in reservations from national tourists and the opening of establishments - a 70 per cent opening of the hotel plant is expected in July, reaching 100 per cent of openings this summer - coupled with the possible relaxation of measures such as mask wearing and the implementation of the EU Covid digital certificate "bodes for a somewhat better summer than last year".
