ARCHIVED - Four covid cases on luxury yacht owned by Qatari royal family docked in Mallorca
The royal family left the yacht on the 5th September following a prolonged cruise
Four cases of Covid have been confirmed amongst the 25-strong crew of the luxury yacht Yasmine of the Sea, which has been moored at the Club de Mar de Palma since Sunday and is owned by the Qatari royal family.
The 80-meter-long ship belongs to the Qatari royal family, which had the yacht built in 2001 and were cruising in the vessel from July 21st to September 5th.
The family of the Prince of Qatar was on the ship when the first crew member who tested positive already had symptoms of coronavirus. The remainder of the crew have been together for more than 50 days.
Analysis of the first positive case of covid-19 on board was confirmed yesterday by a private laboratory from Palma very close to the nautical facilities.
The Yasmine of the Sea set sail from Palma on July 18th in the direction of Valencia.
Three days later, several members of the Qatari royal family embarked, including the prince of Qatar, his sons and several cousins. From there they travelled the Baltic coast for several weeks and on August 21st they reached Porto Cervo (Sardinia). This population of the Italian island suffered one of the most important outbreaks in the transalpine country between July and August.
During their stay in Porto Cervo, the royal family of Qatar and members of the crew led a normal life. They went out to play golf, to the pool, and welcomed a number of friends on the boat. Meanwhile, the crew remained locked in the yacht to avoid infections. On August 28th they reached Eivissa and on September 5th they set sail for Valencia where the Prince of Qatar and his family disembarked and the Yasmine of the Sea headed for Mallorca.
By the time the yacht arrived in Palma, one crew member had been showing symptoms of covid-19 for several days.
Two apartments have been rented for the four positive crew members in which to quarantine.
The Board of Directors of the Club de Mar has said in a statement that all of the protocols recommended by the health authorities have been activated and are being observed. The boat is fully self-contained and quarantine can be maintained on board should it be necessary to quarantine any other crew members.
