Four Andalusian provinces rank among Spain's priciest for car insurance
A new study reveals significant regional and age-related disparities in what Spanish drivers pay to get behind the wheel
If you live in Andalucía and feel like your car insurance bill is particularly painful, it turns out you are not imagining it. A study by comparison platform Rastreator has found that four of the five most expensive provinces in Spain for vehicle insurance are right here in the region.Almería tops the national ranking with an average annual premium of €333, followed by Seville at €327 and Cádiz at €322. Málaga also features in the top five, at €318 per year, alongside Pontevedra, a province in Galicia, the only non-Andalucían province in that group. At the other end of the scale, drivers in Teruel, in the Aragón Region, pay an average of just €236 a year, a difference of 41% compared to Almería .
Antonio Rubio, head of car insurance at Rastreator, says the gap comes down to where you live. "The place of residence remains one of the key factors in calculating the price of a policy," he explains.
"Aspects such as the accident rate in the area, traffic density, the risk of theft, or even the frequency of claims directly influence the final cost. Provinces with less traffic and a lower accident rate tend to have lower premiums."
Where you live is not the only thing that matters, though. Age has an even bigger impact on what you pay. Drivers between 18 and 24 years old face average premiums of €638 per year, which is 120% more than drivers aged 55 to 64, who pay around €290. From the age of 35, costs begin to level off at around €300 annually. "As the age of the licence increases and the accident rate decreases, premiums tend to fall and stabilise," Rubio adds.
There are also notable differences depending on the type of vehicle. Electric and hybrid cars are now the most expensive to insure, at an average of €334 per year, up from €306 in 2025 and around 20% more than petrol vehicles, which average €279. Diesel cars are not far behind at €332, largely because they tend to cover higher mileage.
Overall, the average cost of car insurance across Spain has risen by 3% over the past year, continuing a trend that shows little sign of reversing.
