ARCHIVED - Foreign Office advises against travel to Canary and Balearic Islands
This extends the advice against travel to all of Spain including the mainland and the islands
The FCO has updated info on its travel page, extending its advice against non-essential travel to include the Balearic and Canary islands.
This is a real slap in the face to Spain, which has been attempting to negotiate a safe travel corridor between the UK and the islands which have much lower rates of Covid than the mainland.
This morning Spanish Foreign Minister, Arancha González Laya, said she that the negotiations with the British authorities and "the solidity of the data" woud bear fruit "shortly" and a safe corridor without quarantine restrictions could be opened with at least the Balearic and Canary Islands. "This morning the epidemiological experts from the two countries have met, the dialogue continues and I trust that the solidity of the data and the Spanish explanations will bear fruit soon," she said during an official visit to Ankara.
The Secretary of State for Health, Helen Whately, said that the Government of the United Kingdom recognized that the incidence of coronavirus is lower in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands than in the rest of Spain, but warned that "cases are increasing very rapidly" in "other places".
The FCO responded this afternoon with the following statement on its website:
“From 27th July, the FCO advise against all non-essential travel to Spain, including the Balearic and Canary Islands, based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks in the country.
This advice is based on evidence of increases in cases of COVID-19 in several regions, but particularly in Aragon, Navarra and Catalonia (which include the cities of Zaragoza, Pamplona and Barcelona).
The FCO is not advising those already travelling in Spain to leave at this time. Travellers should follow the advice of the local authorities on how best to protect themselves and others, including any measures that they bring in to control the virus.
If you are returning from Spain you will be required to self-isolate on your return to the UK, but the FCO is not advising you to cut short your visit. You should contact your tour operator or airline if you have any questions about your return journey.”
