Fiestas in Sucina
The main fiestas in Sucina are held in October
The main fiestas in the Sucina are celebrated in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, the patron of the town, in October.
7th October is the Saint’s Day and the Virgen del Rosario, has guarded over Sucina since the parish church was built in the middle of the 18th century. Her image is in the form of a sculpture by Roque López, one of the most talented disciples of the great Murcian sculptor Salzillo.
There are various events leading up to the day itself, but the main event is the procession of the Virgen when the inhabitants “welcome” her to the parish church. The sculpted figure is carried on her throne, garlanded with flowers, from the niche she occupies in the main altarpiece by means of a device created by Fernando Lancis. This transports her automatically down a small ramp, travelling slowly on a plinth dressed with maroon satin, while the national anthem is played and the locals applaud and cheer.
Following this reception the platform is prepared for the procession through the town, and when this is over there are fireworks to welcome the Virgen back to her niche, and the national anthem is again played.
Holy Week ( Semana Santa- Easter week) is also celebrated in Sucina with Masses and processions, such as the one on Good Friday when the tableaux portraying Christ on the cross, Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint John the Baptist re-enact the scene of Calvary in the main town square.
A few years ago the celebrations of Lent in the town were enhanced by the erection of a cross on a small hillock in the outskirts of town. This cross marks the end of a via crucis which starts at the church and follows a route up the hill by some steps which are subtly illuminated on the night in question.
