Estrella de Mar residential area in Los Urrutias
Chalets, townhouses and apartments in Estrella de Mar on the shore of the Mar Menor
Estrella de Mar is a residential development just south of Los Urrutias on the western shore of the Mar Menor (see map) where the first streets were laid out in the 1980s, and which has since become popular with both Spanish and foreign buyers.
The eastern side of the development, on the coastal side of the RM-F54 road, lies along the unspoilt sandy beach of the Mar Menor, while on the western side the development extends inland on the flat terrain towards the crop fields of the Campo de Cartagena.
On the beach side of the urbanization the property consists mainly of chalets and townhouses, with most of the larger homes enjoying their own swimming pools, while inland the small houses and apartments are more compact. On this side of Estrella de Mar quite a number of properties have been built close together, but the general atmosphere is friendly and sociable with a sizeable year-round expat community.
By the 400-metre-long beach is a social club with two tennis courts and a crazy golf garden. A few bars and restaurants line the main road as it passes through Estrella de Mar and the area is far from deserted even in the winter months, although most will feel the need to pop into Los Urrutias to the north or Los Nietos to the south-east for the daily shopping. The city of Cartagena is only 20 minutes away by car.
The far northern end of the beach is part of a conservation area to protect the Spanish toothcarp, and bathing is not allowed in this area. Sightings of wading birds and other species are common here, while at the southern end the beach runs along the seafront in the as yet un-built La Perla development. The beach is well looked after and relatively free from the pollution and foul smells which bother residents and bathers slightly further north in El Carmolí, and contributes to a relaxed and tranquil lifestyle on the shore of the Mar Menor.
