ARCHIVED - Eleven doctors test positive for Covid following Palma conference
The head of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies in Spain was also in attendance
Just as Spain is moving toward a state of new normal following the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, it has been revealed that eleven Asturian doctors have tested positive for Covid after attending a conference in the Mallorcan capital of Palma. Around 2,500 people, most of them health care professionals, attended the event and also in situ was Fernando Simón, director of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies in Spain.
The doctors returned home shortly after Simón gave a glowing press conference about the “seriousness” with which the Balearic Island government was treating the pandemic, and their positive diagnoses served to hike up the cumulative incidence rate of the Community of Asturias. The Ministry of Health has confirmed that none of the doctors are displaying serious symptoms following the outbreak and there have been no hospitalisations.
Those affected are eight young doctors based in Gijón, and three senior practitioners from the town of Jarrio.
The Balearic Society of Family Medicine was quick to point out that there is no evidence to suggest that the medics contracted Covid during the conference and Mr Simón himself agreed that a mass screening wasn’t necessary since all the attendees had been vaccinated.
So far there have been no incidents in Mallorca associated with this event and no positive case or outbreak is known among the 200 Balearic health workers who attended the conference and its associated workshops.
