ARCHIVED - Elche school relocates pupils due to structural damage by storm
Ausiàs March school in Elche has been forced to move classes to Casablanca school one day before the school term starts
Children in the Ausiàs March school, located in the Alicante town in the Baix Vinalopó area, have seen the start of the school year disrupted because of problems with the building’s foundations. Recent inspections of the school found several structural problems, which Elche town councillors put down to the age of the building and the recent heavy rains in the area which caused widespread damage across the whole Valencian region.
To guarantee pupils’ safety, local authorities have temporarily closed the school and moved students to the Casablanca school just a few metres down the road. They assured that technicians will continue to study the condition of the school building in the coming weeks to determine what action needs to be taken to get it back to a usable state.
In the meantime, workers from the Town Hall have been moving the tables and furniture to allow the 260 pupils of Ausiàs Marcha school to start classes today on Wednesday September 8 at the Casablanca school, which already has 160 students of its own.
As well as keeping pupils safe from unsound buildings, teachers are also tasked with enforcing additional security measures to protect against Covid-19. To cope with the increased numbers of students at the Casablanca school, prefabricated classrooms will be put up in the playground for primary school pupils and the canteen service will be expanded to provide food for all the children.
