ARCHIVED - Elche hits 37.7 degrees to become hottest place in Spain on Sunday May 16
Molina de Segura in the Murcia region was just behind with 37.1 degrees
Sunday was an absolute sizzler along the Mediterranean coastline and although forecasters had warned that the Murcia region would be the hottest in Spain, it was actually Elche, just across the border in the Alicante province of the Valencia region which pipped Molina de Segura in Murcia at the post to become the hottest place in Spain on Sunday afternoon with a scorching 37.7 degrees.
This type of heat is normally only experienced in July and was a breathtakingly hot reminder of just how warm it can get here in the peak of the summer.
Fortunately the afternoon was also quite breezy, reducing that feeling of stifling heat which usually accompanies temperatures in the high 30s.
All of the Mediterranean coastline was on alert for the heatwave, and the “leaderboard” features representatives from all three regions; at the top is Elche with 37.7; second is Molina de Segura in Murcia with 37.1; third place is occupied by Málaga with 37; fourth by Coin, in Málaga province, Andalucía, with 36.8; Novelda in Alicante is fifth with 36.6; Cieza in Murcia sixth with 36.6; Orihuela in Alicante province seventh with 36.4; Xátiva in the Valencia province eighth with 36.3; Albox in the Almería province of Andalucía with 36.1 and Murcia city also with 36.1 sharing ninth position.
On Monday morning, however, temperatures have dropped 13 degrees, back to a more normal level for this time of year.
