Driver arrested in Almería after hitting toddler and crashing into shop while trying to flee

A two-year-old boy and his mother escaped serious injury after being struck by a car in El Ejido,

A young driver has been arrested in El Ejido, Almería, after allegedly running over a two-year-old child and his mother, then attempting to flee before crashing into a closed shop.

According to the emergency service 112 Andalucía and the Ayuntamiento de El Ejido, the accident happened around 4.45pm on Thursday February 12. The mother and child were walking together when the little boy reportedly let go of his mother’s hand and stepped into the road, just as a car was passing.

The driver, described by police sources as a young man who “got scared”, is said to have left the scene without stopping to help. His attempt to get away ended shortly afterwards when his vehicle crashed into a nearby business that was closed at the time.

Policía Local officers, along with the Guardia Civil and 061 paramedics, attended the scene. Fortunately, both the mother and child escaped without serious injuries and were described by Ayuntamiento sources as “in good condition.”

The driver was detained at the scene of the second crash and later tested negative for both alcohol and drugs. His paperwork and vehicle documents were confirmed to be in order, and police have initiated the corresponding legal proceedings for the accident and the alleged hit-and-run.

The Ayuntamiento noted that no one else was injured in the second crash, which caused only material damage to the storefront.

Local residents were said to be shaken by the accident, which took place on an otherwise quiet afternoon. One municipal source commented, “It was a frightening moment for everyone who saw it, but thankfully the mother and child are fine.”

Police continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
