Click HereAs normal, the Carnival peñas in Águilas put on a fabulous display for 2020, with a completely new set of costumes and dance routines.
Last year costumes generally followed an environmental theme, many of them including recycled materials, but this year not a recycled lollipop stick was to be seen, with bling firmly back on the carnival menu.
Metallic sheens to fabrics, clever patterning on leggings and bodices and glitter on absolutely everything was standard throughout the procession, although carnivalgoers had a long wait for some of the most spectacular creations which paraded en-block at the end of a long five hour stretch for spectators.
Many of the more family-orientated peñas paraded earlier in the evening, but the stars of the show came out with the midnight owls and it was close to the witching hour before the most bewitching of creations took to the streets.
This year the carnival was a real drag, with more men in tights than ever before....although there were a good number in skirts and fetching retro-trouser suits as well as some absolutely splendidly muscled male dancers leading their flock of gaily-feathered hens behind them.
And of course, carnival isn´t carnival without a spot of mockery, this year's targets including Donald Trump who rode in a presidential open-topped car, surrounded by bodyguards who blocked the crowd from photographing and ordered photographers to spreadeagle on the bonnet for a stop and search, before builders unravelled a paper wall to block out the vast crowd of partygoing Mexicans behind the presidential wagon, and the resident of Plaza Antoniio Cortijos who forced the cancellation of many open-air concerts in the plaza by complaining about the noise last summer......carnival isn´t carnival without a spot of local politics!!!!
On Tuesday and Saturday evenings the Águilas peñas parade again and on Friday evening invited peñas from around the region and neighbouring provinces will parade in their own spectacular event. Lots more fun to come this week: Click for full programme of Águilas Carnival 2020
