ARCHIVED - Disorientated Griffon vulture rescued by Puerto Lumbreras police
The vulture strayed into an animal feeding shed in the Puerto Lumbreras countyside
The Policía Local in Puerto Lumbreras were called out on Wednesday to the rural area of La Ermita after a caller reported that a bird of prey had entered a livestock feeding shed and was perched on the top of a silo of food, and when they arrived found that they were dealing with a disorientated griffon vulture.
After attempting to fly away a few times the bird eventually collided with one of the fences around the premises, suffering minor concussion and other injuries, but despite this more than one attempt was needed to capture it and prevent it from causing itself further harm. The bird was then delivered in a cage to staff from the Wildlife Recovery Centre of El Valle, in the mountains to the south of Murcia, where it will be treated before being returned to the wild.
Griffon vultures in Spain generally hatch in the spring and first take to the air in July, but it is at around this time of the year that they leave the nest and seek to establish their own feeding territory. At this point many young birds become disorientated, and are often found dehydrated and suffering from malnutrition after failing to find sufficient food and cases such as the one in Puerto Lumbreras this week are commonly reported in the regional press.
