ARCHIVED - Disaster averted in Santander as children’s playground collapses into underground car park
The roof of the car park caved in before dawn on Monday morning
A potential disaster was avoided purely by chance on Monday in the city of Santander, the capital of the northern Spanish region of Cantabria, when a children’s playground caved in due to the roof of an underground car park collapsing beneath it as residents reported hearing what sounded like two explosions.
That no casualties ensued is due almost entirely to the fact that the incident occurred at approximately 6.30 in the morning, when most of the residents of the housing development in which the park lies were either still asleep or preparing their breakfast. Immediately the police, the fire brigade and emergency medical staff began the search for possible victims both above ground and in the car park where the 500 locals leave their vehicles, and while the Mayoress arrived with a megaphone to ask the community leaders on each staircase to visit flats one by one and ask if anyone was missing it was a huge relief that no such cases came to light.
As a result, although there will have been substantial damage to the cars parked inside the garage some residents were in a state of shock as they imagined what could have happened if the collapse had occurred at 6 in the evening rather than 6 in the morning…
