ARCHIVED - Disappointment as Jet2 cancels all flights to Spain until July 1
Easyjet will review its own schedule following the decision to leave Spain on amber for a further three weeks
The uncertainty continues for travellers attempting to visit family or check up on second properties in Spain following the decision of the UK government to leave Spain on an amber alert level for a further three-week period starting on 04.00 on June 8 and with the situation reviewed again on June 28.
The British Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott, had indicated when visiting Alicante on June 2 that it was “unlikely” that Spain would be moving to green and had furthermore ruled out the possibility that the UK government would consider permitting travel at a “green level”to specific regions reporting low Covid rates, such as the offshore Balearic and Canary islands or the Valencia region.
The Spanish government continues to insist that this is a viable option and on Wednesday tourism minister Reyes Maroto yet again raised the topic when attending the “Congreso Digital Tourist” in Benidorm, Alicante, insisting that her department “would petition the British government again to accept this request.”
Benidorm is an area for which British tourists are an important revenue source and although significant efforts are being undertaken to attract domestic tourists for the summer season this year to compensate for their absence, there is a high level of concern over the possibility of further disruption to flights in the second half of the year should new variants continue to emerge and spread.
Jet2 has made the decision to delay the resumption of its European flights programme until July 1, due principally to the announcement that Portugal was being moved from green down to amber from 4am onwards on Tuesday morning, a decision which has already pushed the price of a return flight from Portugal before that point to astronomical levels as Brits currently in the country take the difficult decision of cutting short their holiday or quarantining for 10 days on their return to the UK.
The decision also affects all Spanish flights, another frustration for travellers who have been forced to rebook flights from all airlines, some several times during the last few months, as the restrictions continue to change.
Recently Easyjet passengers have reported a rash of cancelled and rescheduled flights, and the company confirmed on Friday that it too would be “reviewing” the situation as Portugese flights necessarily affect services to other countries as planes and staff move from airport to airport; this could lead to further readjustments of Spanish flights.
Jet2 said in a statement: 'Following today's update, we have taken the decision to restart flights and holidays on July 1 2021.
"For any destinations currently on the Amber List, we are also allowing customers to amend their booking free of charge if they are due to travel between July 1 and July 21 2021."·
The CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays said: “We know how disappointed our customers and independent travel agency partners will be following today's announcement, and we share their concerns and frustrations.
“We are now calling for complete openness and transparency when it comes to the data, so that customers and the industry can really understand what is driving these decisions.”
“We agree that public health must be the number one priority. However, despite all the evidence and data showing that travel can restart safely and at scale, the UK continues to remain largely grounded whilst the rest of Europe opens up.”
Jet2 said customers affected by changes to the programme would have their bookings automatically cancelled and would be given a full refund.
The Portuguese Confederation of Tourism said on Friday that the decision made by the UK government was “disastrous”.
Portugal commented that it could not understand the "logic" of the UK's move.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that the decision had been made amidst fears about the increasing incidence rate in Portugal and about a mutation of the Delta variant first identified in India.
Some 68 cases of the Delta variant have been identified in Portugal, including 12 cases with an additional so-called Nepal mutation, according to official figures.
There are certainly cases of the “Indian/Delta” variant in Spain, but at the moment the predominant variant is the Kent/Alpha variant which first reached the country during the pre-Christmas period when UK travellers were permitted to enter Spain for a short period before the UK government put the country into lockdown.
The Covid situation in Spain is fairly static, and the accumulated incidence rate of 118 cases per 100,000 inhabitants has remained at the same level for the last two days.
The vaccination programme continues to roll out steadily across the country, with 39.5 percent of the population having received a first dose (18,720,164) and 21 per cent of the population (9,979,204) having been given two doses.
On June 7 Spain opens up to international travellers from all countries, as long as proof of full vaccination is provided.
The Foreign Office continues to warn against all but essential travel to Spain, apart from the Canary Islands, although the islands remain on amber alert along with the rest of the country.
