ARCHIVED - DANA puts five communities in Spain on alert for storms
Experts predict that the stormy weather will continue for the rest of the week in many parts of Spain
Meteorologists held a meeting this week to try and determine what kind of weather Spain is facing as summer makes way for autumn on Wednesday September 22. The experts put five communities – Andalucía, Catalonia, the Region of Murcia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands – on alert on Tuesday for heavy rain, rough seas and storms, with an accumulated rainfall of 70 litres per square metre per hour expected in some areas.
The experts fear that the end to the bad weather is not yet in sight, with meteorologist Francisco Martín warning that the isolated high-altitude depression (DANA) could move towards the southwest and the centre of Spain. Given that it is a retrograde DANA, he explained, it is more unpredictable and difficult to track.
According to the meteorologists, as of Wednesday the rainfall will be much less intense, although it is expected to continue in areas of the Balearic Islands and in the east of the Valencian Community, with a chance of extending to other eastern areas of the country.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has predicted that, by the end of the week, the DANA will begin to recede, although the stormy weather will most likely continue in inland and eastern areas, as well as in the Balearics, throughout Thursday and Friday.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Mr Martín explained that DANAs are not always associated with adverse weather, but that specific conditions such as high humidity and instability must be present in order for it to generate severe storms. Global warming, he added, means that now DANAs can occur anywhere and at any time of the year.
