ARCHIVED - Daily Covid deaths reach double figures in Andalucía; Covid update July 22
A further 13 fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours in the provinces of Granada, Almería, Málaga and Sevilla
Andalucía’s latest Covid update shows that the number of daily cases has dropped below 3,000 for the first time in a week, although the incidence rate has risen for the twenty-first consecutive day in the region.
Of the 2,949 cases in Thursday’s report (July 22), 880 were in Málaga, 509 were in Cádiz, 397 in Sevilla, 302 in Granada, 274 in Almería, 220 in Córdoba, 200 in Huelva and the province with the lowest number of cases was Jaén, with 167.
This figure is a slight drop from the past week, as the number of daily cases has been over 3,500 every day since last Thursday (July 15), but the cumulative incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants in the past 14 days continues to increase and is now 434.3.
Concern about the incidence rate, which has risen by more than 100 points in just a week, has led the regional government to propose even stricter restrictions for the municipalities with the highest incidence rates and, across Spain, some Comunidades Autónomas have even asked the President, Pedro Sánchez, to make face masks mandatory once again.
Hospitalizations: another worrying figure is the number of people being admitted into hospital with the virus, with 115 further hospitalizations in the past 24 hours.
Despite claims that the fifth wave would affect mostly young people and, therefore, lead to fewer hospitalizations, the healthcare system is beginning to feel the pressure once again with 911 Covid patients in the region’s hospitals, of whom 160 are in intensive care.
Fatalities: Covid has claimed the lives of 13 more people in the past 24 hours; five in Granada; four in Almería; three in Málaga; and one in Sevilla. These deaths bring the total in the region up to 10,293 since March 2020.
Recoveries: the total number of people to have recovered from the virus in Andalucía is 611,258; 1,722 in the past 24 hours.
Vaccines: with the 108,045 vaccines administered since the previous update, 62.8 per cent of the population has now received at least one jab.
The rapidly rising number of Covid cases across the whole country mean that the only way to slow down the fifth wave is to speed up the vaccination process as much as possible, as 83 per cent of people newly diagnosed with coronavirus in Spain are unvaccinated.
