ARCHIVED - Daily Covid case numbers in Spain hit 10-month low
The coronavirus incidence rate in Spain continues to fall as vaccination takes effect
The latest daily Covid-19 update published by the national government of Spain on Tuesday evening provided further good news regarding the state of the pandemic in this country, with the 1,605 new cases confirmed representing the lowest 24-hour total since 12th August last year.
At the same time, the 14-day accumulated incidence rate dropped still further to 101.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants – a week ago it stood at 113 – and in none of the 17 regions and two north African enclaves is the figure higher than 200. The highest rates reported are those in Andalucía (184), La Rioja (178), the Basque Country (140) and Navarra (115), while at the other end of the scale are the Comunidad Valenciana and Ceuta (both 39.2), the Balearics (40.8), Galicia (41.9) and Murcia (46.1).
One negative aspect of Tuesday’s data is a slight increase in the number of Covid patients receiving hospital treatment, now accounting for 2.64 per cent of all occupied beds, while in intensive care units the equivalent figure continued to fall and now stands at 9.54 per cent.
The Tuesday report lists a further Covid-related 62 fatalities, taking the official Ministry of Health death toll since February 2020 up to 80,579.
Vaccination data
In the meantime, the number of people to have received the full dose of immunization vaccines in Spain has risen to just over 13 million, equating to 27.4 per cent of the population, and it is hoped that the figure will reach 15 million by the end of the week.
The 21.7 million to have received at least one vaccine dose represent 45.8 per cent of the entire population of Spain, and the Ministry of Health has announced that the age groups in which mass immunization is yet to begin (all of those aged under 40) may be targeted at the same time rather than sequentially in order to accelerate the process as much as possible.
