ARCHIVED - CV-95 in Torrevieja closed due to N-332 bridge repairs
The bridge over the main road in the Vega Baja town was damaged after being struck by a lorry crane last weekend
Work to secure and repair the N-332 bridge over the CV-95 in Torrevieja began today after the structure was severely damaged when it was struck by a lorry crane on Saturday December 4, forcing the closure of the road until the weekend at least.
As such, drivers must make detours (see images below) along the N-332 as an alternative connection between the town centre of Torrevieja and the University Hospital and urbanisations to the south of the municipality and Orihuela Costa.
According to Torrevieja Town Hall, the State Roads Unit has begun removing parts of the bridge's support structure which were "badly damaged by the impact of the lorry", specifically, one of the beams and a small section of the upper deck on the N-332, though the national road remains open to traffic continues to run normally.
"We expect traffic to be able to safely use the urban section of the CV-95 over the weekend or early next week," said the local council, adding that its technicians have been in regular contact with the Ministry of Mobility and Transport since the accident.
But a lack of "alternative diversions" on this section of the CV-95 has reportedly worsened the traffic situation on the N-332, which is already complicated on a daily basis.
In fact the section of road has been identified by the Directorate General of Traffic as a "black spot due to the number of accidents".
The CV-95 is used by an average of 15,000 vehicles a day and connects Torrevieja town centre with the University Hospital, Los Balcones, La Ceñuela, Orihuela Costa, La Coronelita and San Miguel-Bigastro-Orihuela, as well as the northern toll access to the AP-7 Alicante-Cartagena.
And earlier this year, the Valencian regional government announced plans to plough 30 million euros into widening the CV-95 as it passes through the Vega Baja, connecting Torrevieja and Orihuela, to improve road safety.
Meanwhile, the N-332 bypass has a daily traffic volume of around 40,000 vehicles. It's a single lane road in each direction, with a double continuous line to avoid overtaking, and has been pending a project to create dual lanes by the central government for decades.
