Currency investment advice from Blacktower Financial Management (Int.) Ltd.
Keith Littlewood offers his top currency investment tips
Which Currency should you invest in?
This is a subject I raise in every case when I discuss investment strategy. It is all very well looking at how best to diversify a portfolio and getting the best returns possible for the least amount of risk. Usually you would be happy if your investment beat inflation or even better got returns of 7% 8% 9% or more. These returns can be meaningless if you do not get the currency question right.
Here is an example: Client A lives in Spain and invested £100,000 (in Sterling) in 2015 and his portfolio has done very well and is currently worth £125,000. On paper looks great, but, this client is actually worse off than he was in 2015. The exchange rate was 1.36 €/£ when he invested and now it is it 1.08. The £100,000 was worth €136,000 in 2015 and his £125,000 portfolio is now worth €135,000. This is actually a €1,000 loss. Had this client invested in Euro’s in 2015 his portfolio could now be worth €170,000. Of course, this can happen in reverse but when assessing investment strategy currency valuations can add a significant layer of risk.
When sitting with an adviser you must look at your currency requirements now and in the future. No-one can predict currency movements so you need to make a decision relevant to your situation.
There are a couple of things you can consider yourself. If your pensions are paid in £ sterling then you should consider diversifying and investing income investments in € Euro’s – especially if you are intending to live in Spain for the rest of your life, this way currency fluctuations will affect you less. If the majority of your wealth is in € Euro (e.g. property, bank accounts etc) then making an investment in £ Sterling could be wise especially if there is a possibility of a move back to the UK in the future.
Every case is unique and only you know what the best is for you, a good Independent Financial Adviser will explore this with you and make sure all your eventualities are covered.
In today’s financial climate it is essential you do everything you can to make sure your money is safe and secure and what you want to transpire in the future has the best chance of happening.
