ARCHIVED - Covid incidence drops 10 points: Spain pandemic update May 18
The WHO has warned that the “pandemic is not over” and urges Spain to increase vaccinations
Coronavirus hospitalisations and infections in older age groups have been rebounding across Spain in recent weeks, exacerbated by several celebrations like Easter and the removal of masks indoors.
Although the incidence rate has reduced slightly according to the latest Ministry of Health report on Tuesday May 17, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that the pandemic is far from over and has urged nations to redouble their vaccination efforts.
According to WHO Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, infections have increased in more than 50 countries, and although the high immunity of the population means that death rates are lower, this is no reason to lower our guard.
“This pandemic is not over and we need all leaders to step up to increase the population’s immunity and reach the whole world,” Mr Ghebreyesus reiterated, adding that if herd immunity is not improved through vaccines, the world could face “waves of death” capable of “overwhelming” health systems once again.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health in Spain reported 52,112 new cases of coronavirus on May 17, of which 25,958 were diagnosed in people over 60 years of age, which is a considerable decrease on the 68,234 infections registered in the last update.
This brings the total number of infections in Spain since the beginning of the pandemic to 12,179,234.
Cumulative incidence rate
The average rate of infections in the last 14 days in people over 60 years has decreased slightly to 846.55 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 856.56 reported last Friday.
In the past two weeks, 104,278 positives have been diagnosed across Spain in this age group.
Andalucía continues to register the lowest 14-day rate in the country, with 480.05 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the Balearic Islands (619.67) and Catalonia (643.69).
The Region of Murcia is still hovering at double the Spanish national average while the Valencian Community is slightly lower, at 722 cases.
Fatalities
The Ministry has reported an additional 198 Covid-related fatalities in the last 24 hours, while 263 deaths have been recorded in the last week.
This brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 105,642.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 7,558 patients admitted to hospital for Covid (up from 7,291 on the same day last week) while 363 people are being treated for more serious symptoms in the ICU (up from 356).
This data means that 6.10% of all hospital beds are occupied by coronavirus patients (compared to 5.89% last Tuesday) while the occupancy rate of ICU beds has increased from 3.96% to 4.20%.
Vaccination data
As of May 17, a total of 39,059,866 people, representing 92.6% of the population over the age of 12 are now double jabbed. In addition, 39,222,113 people, or 93%, have had at least one vaccine.
