ARCHIVED - Covid antibodies decrease quickly following mild cases say US researchers
Antibodies decrease by roughly half every 36 days
Antibodies in patients with mild symptoms of Covid-19 decrease "sharply" 3 months after infection, according to a study carried out by researchers from the University of California (United States) which has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers found that from the third month after contracting the infection, the level of antibodies is significantly reduced. Antibody tests were conducted at an average of 36 days and 82 days after the initial symptoms of infection. The researchers found that in people with mild cases of COVID-19, antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 dropped sharply over the first three months after infection, decreasing by roughly half every 36 days. If sustained at that rate, the antibodies would disappear within about a year.
The study highlights concernsraising concerns over antibody-based “immunity passports,” the possibility of herd immunity and reliability of antibody tests.
This ties in with a Spanish study which also suggests immunity diminishes with time.
