Costa del Sol relaxes water restrictions after torrential rains

Malaga homeowners can once again fill their pools and water their gardens

We’re all heartily sick of the relentless rain at this stage, but the unsettled weather of late has had one really positive effect: the parched reservoirs in the Costa del Sol have been replenished and as a result, Malaga City Council has lifted all water restrictions.

This means that, among other things, beach showers will once again be switched on from June 15.

The restrictions, which came into force in November 2023 to counteract the drought, prohibited the use of potable water for street cleaning, watering gardens, parks and golf courses, and washing cars. Supply to public drinking fountains and showers was also shut off.

Given the length of time the limits were in place, Malaga mayor Francisco de la Torre did authorise some exceptions back in January; people were allowed to irrigate their gardens one day per week, for example, and top up their swimming pools. Beach footbaths have also been back up and running since Easter.

But now, although the water ban has essentially been lifted, there is one important restriction still in force: each Malaga inhabitant is expected to use a maximum of 225 litres of water per day – this is roughly equivalent to more than one very large bathtub filled to the brim.
