Cold snap continues this weekend: Spain weather forecast January 16-19
A new DANA will bring 48 hours of cold, rain and storms to the Mediterranean area of Spain
Following sub-zero temperatures in dozens of provinces in Spain mid-week, this cold snap looks set to continue well into the weekend, but it will be joined by even more unpleasant weather.
A DANA will approach the east of Spain on Thursday January 16, resulting in 48 hours of instability along the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands. The outlook in these areas is for storms, heavy rain and strong gusts of winds for at least a couple of days.
Over the weekend, this weather system will begin moving away from Spain but the weather will continue to be very unsettled with lots of rain and overcast skies on the horizon. In addition, several weather alerts for freezing temperatures remain in place.
Thursday January 16
Thursday will dawn bright and clear but as the DANA moves in later in the day, the skies will become very overcast along the entire Mediterranean coast, with heavy rain and storms forecast in the east, particularly in the south of Valencia and the north of Alicante.
Daytime temperatures won’t increase much, hovering around the mid-teens in most parts.
Yellow alerts for freezing temperatures have been activated in Andalucía, Aragon, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, Galicia and the Valencian Community, the latter being under an additional warning for rain.
Friday January 17
The weather should be stable on the Atlantic side of the country on Friday, with only partly cloudy skies and no rain forecast. It’s a different story in the Mediterranean, where it will be very overcast and more stormy intervals are likely along the entire coast and the Balearic Islands.
Few changes are expected with regard to day-time temperatures but Friday night should be a little milder in southern Spain.
Yellow alerts for freezing temperatures remain active in Aragon, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Madrid, Galicia, the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community, the latter being under an additional warning for rain.
Saturday January 18
Although the low pressure system will start to move away, the Mediterranean can still expect cloudy skies and persistent showers with occasional thunderstorms, but it should dry up early in the morning.
In the rest of the country, partly cloudy or clear skies with no rain will predominate.
Day-time temperatures will finally start to climb in the east of Spain, but there will still be a chill in the air in general.
Yellow alerts for freezing temperatures remain active in Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha and Catalonia, while the Valencian Community and Balearic Islands are under warnings for dangerous sea conditions.
Sunday January 19
The weather should settle down considerably on Sunday and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has lifted all of the alerts.
Cloudy or overcast skies with showers accompanied by some storms in the Balearic Islands are expected to persist at first, and there’s more rain forecast in the east of the country.
Day-time temperatures are expected to fall in the northwest of Spain and in the northeast, while no changes are expected in the rest of the country. Minimum temperatures will rise in the far west with the arrival of a new front and will fall in the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands.
