ARCHIVED - Cleaning of Lorca ramblas brought forward ahead of storm season
The clean-up campaign will focus on Lorca's Las Chatas, Los Peñones, Las Señoritas and Cementerio watercourses
Lorca Council has brought forward its annual cleaning campaign of ramblas in the municipality to avoid extensive damage during the fast-approaching autumn storm season that traditionally brings with it torrential rains.
The clearing of rambla watercourses will focus on the Las Chatas, Los Peñones, Las Señoritas and Cementerio wadis and the Town Council has asked the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS) to carry out maintenance work on the rest of the ramblas in the municipality.
Councillor for Rural Development, Antonio Navarro, this week toured some of the Lorca wadis where the work will be carried out "almost immediately".

"It is a campaign that we carry out every year... but on this occasion the cleaning will be brought forward in anticipation that there may be episodes of torrential rains at the end of August, due to the high temperatures that have been reached this summer," he explained.
With regards to the ramblas outside the town centre that the local council "cannot act on because they do not fall within the authority's competence", CHS has been asked to clean them "so that in the event of torrential rains, the water can flow without causing damage", Navarro stressed.
These wadis include: San Julián, Diecisiete Arcos, Salda, de Béjar, del Pintao, de la Peladilla, de Mouliaá, de los Mateos, de Beas, de la Galera and de Torralba, amongst others.
"The council will continue to work to ensure the wadis of our municipality are in perfect condition, not only because it is our responsibility to maintain and clean sections of wadis that pass through the town centre or urban areas of Lorca, but also because it is a matter of safety," added the Councillor for Rural Development.
