A host of free events in the city centre over Christmas, New Year and Three Kings
Christmas and the festive season are now officially under way in the city of Cartagena after the lights decorating the city centre were switched on at a ceremony in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento on Thursday 5th December.
The lights will remain operational for a month until after Three Kings Day on 6th January, the most impressive and innovative decorations this year including a 14-metre-high illuminated cone in the Plaza de España, a large 6-metre bauble outside the Palacio Consistorial and a fountains of lights on the centre island of the Puertas de Madrid roundabout.
In addition, the decorations in Calle Mayor and Plaza Castellini have been renewed and in total there are over 300 light displays in the streets, and with the municipal “Belén” (nativity scene) also now open in Plaza San Francisco until 6th January Christmas is now in full swing in Cartagena!
The massive tableau of the Belén is worth a visit on its own, featuring over 700 figures created by Nicolás Almansa and Juan Antonio Griñán. It has been set up every year since 1975 by Francisco Alarte and every year more details are added, many of them deliberately anachronistic, along with representations of some of the churches of Cartagena and the windmills in the surrounding countryside.
