ARCHIVED - Cartagena-Los Nietos rail services resume 5 weeks after the gota fría flooding
Fingers crossed as another gota fría storm arrives in the Costa Cálida!
On Tuesday 22nd October, over five weeks after the disastrous flooding along the coast of the Mar Menor due to the huge “gota fría” storm of mid-September in the Region of Murcia, the railway infrastructures management body Adif is finally ready to re-open the FEVE line between El Estrecho and Los Nietos, making it possible to travel again between the shore of the lagoon and the city of Cartagena.
With another gota fría bringing persistent rain to the Campo de Cartagena on Tuesday morning, it would be cruelly ironic if the re-opening of the line were to be postponed again due to further flooding, but Aemet are warning that the rain could intensify during the morning and of course the possibility cannot be ruled out.
During the floods of the middle of September the eastern section of the line suffered serious damage, and it was only recently that the FEVE services resumed as far as La Unión. The remaining stretch to reach Los Nietos required further work, re-establishing and reinforcing the trackbed and repairing drainage and other structure under and alongside the tracks themselves.
