ARCHIVED - Cartagena to spend 5.4 million euros on archaeological heritage in 2023
The Roman amphitheatre and the Despeñaperros fortress are among the sites where Cartagena Town Hall will be concentrating its efforts
The Town Hall of Cartagena has announced that among the items included in its public spending budget for 2023 is a total of 5.4 million euros on the recovery and preservation of the city’s archaeological heritage.
This figure is distributed among various projects, including the excavations in the quarter of La Morería Baja (close the already excavated Roman forum area), the fortress of Despeñaperros, the creation of a museum in the house formerly occupied by Isaac Peral (the inventor of the first electric submarine) and the Roman amphitheatre. This last project is a long-term one, with much of the amphitheatre lying underneath the bullring – although the ring is no longer in use, this makes excavation difficult.
The full list of anticipated spending on archaeological sites in Cartagena in 2023 is as follows:
The Roman amphitheatre 500,000 euros (+ 750,000 from the Spanish government)
Morería Baja and 2,000,000 euros
Fuerte de Despeñaperros 170,000 euros
Casa Isaac Peral museum 250,000 euros
Windmill in El Algar 282,545 euros (works contract already awarded)
Cueva Victoria 300,000 euros
West side of the Molinete hill 1,800,000 euros (including EU funds)
